Going up against Bieber

You’ve heard of Drake and Justin Bieber — you might even be a fan –but there are three additional contenders for new artist from the yr at the 2010 Juno Awards whose sound stylings you may not be familiar with. Here’s a primer to Canada’s newest (generally, youngest) hit music-makers, what they have to say for themselves, plus two cents from the critics.

Carly Rae Jepsen (Mission)

In regards to the artist: In 2007, this 24-yearold came third on Season 5 of Canadian Idol. About a year later, the baby-voiced singer-songwriter released her debut album, Tug of War. The title track won the Canadian Radio Music Awards’ 2010 Song from the Yr.

What the artist said: “I would like to play very good music that lasts a lifetime. You don’t need to be recognized by everybody. You just reach out to the folks who feel what you’re doing, you know?” Jepsen told Maple Music.

What the critic stated: “I can’t help but think there’s a little invisible ticker over poor Carly’s head, counting down her inevitable slide into irrelevance,” says ChartAttack.com.

Shiloh (Abbotsford )

Concerning the artist: Following winning a radio contest in Edmonton, 16-yearold punk-pop singer Shiloh Hoganson released her debut album, Picture Imperfect, in Canada last 12 months. She has shared the stage with Lady GaGa, Hedley, and Theory of the Deadman.

What the artist said: “I never resort to putting myself in one genre; you know, whatever I sense that day, I’ll just put it down on paper and record it,” Shiloh told Youthink.ca.

What the critic mentioned: “At only 16 years of age, Shiloh has lots of time to develop not just her songwriting but also her persona, and it will be interesting to see what comes of her inside the future, for she definitely has the makings of a punk-pop superstar. In any event, she’s off to a promising start with Picture Imperfect, a likable album with lots of hit material,” says All Music Guide.

Danny Fernandes (Toronto)

About the artist: Following years of busting moves in commercials, dance videos and with Toronto Raptors Dance Pak, this 24-year-old R&B singer won Best Canadian pop video on the 12 months at the MuchMusic Video Awards for “Private Dancer,” from his debut album, Intro.

What the artist explained: “I sleep, eat and breathe music from when I wake up until I go to bed.”

What the critic explained: “Fernandes’s debut album Intro oozes with the familiar sexy, bare-chested Top 40 beats designed to rev up your libido and cloud reasonable judgment,” says the Edmonton Journal’s Amanda Ashl.

Drake (Toronto)

In regards to the artist: Since last year’s release of his hit mixtape, So Far Gone, actor-turned-rapper Aubrey “Drake” Graham has risen to hip-hop stardom, collaborating with the likes of Eminem, Kanye West and Jay-Z. We’re still waiting for debut album Thank Me Later.

What the artist stated: “I make music for individuals to get lost in it, so, as long as it takes you somewhere, then I’ve succeeded,” Drake told Billboard.

What the critic mentioned: “That the memorable, constantly surprising lyrics and smooth flow are laid on top in the rich productions and sticky hooks means that you will find some jams here that will put the competition on their heels,” All Music Guide wrote of So Far Gone.

Justin Bieber (Stratford)

Regarding the artist: This 16-year-old pop/ R&B singer-songwriter sensation first got noticed on YouTube, before being signed by R&B sensation Usher. His chart-topping debut album, My World, was released in 2009 — eventually going platinum in the U.S. and Canada.

What the artist said: “I would always just sing around the house and play instruments, but I never tried to get famous,” Bieber told the Toronto Star.

What the critic stated: “Those who dismiss Bieber out of hand are missing out on a seriously great pop record, one that mines vintage teen-pop themes but plays like a primer on 2010-model bubble gum,” wrote Rolling Stone.     - Source
